As I mentioned in my post on Vienna, it only takes one hour via train to travel to Bratislava from Vienna. Bratislava is not one of the most popular or trendy destinations in Europe, so it was nice to visit somewhere a bit different and enjoy the quieter atmosphere for a change.
It is a very small city, with not a whole lot to do in comparison to other capital cities. There are a lot of restaurants and ice-creameries, so it was a very relaxed, quaint city to visit for one day.
We spent about 5 hours walking around and that was enough to see everything we wanted to.
What to do-
- Bratislava Castle- After you have seen everything in the town, the Bratislava is nice to walk around and offers great views back over the city
- Michael’s Gate- The iconic picture of Bratislava involves Michael’s Gate through the old streets of Bratislava
- Hlavné Námestie- Bratislava’s old town square
- Slovak Parliament Building in Bratislava
As my brother and I only spent a few hours here, we didn’t do everything Bratislava has to offer. There are plenty of cathedrals, a zoo, a town hall and another castle to explore if you have more time in Bratislava.
Travel tips-
- Vienna to Bratislava- As I said, this takes 1 hour each way. Costing 14€ return.
- Bratislava to Budapest- Some travellers choose to stay a night in Bratislava when coming from Vienna, then continue on to Budapest to break up the (already short) travel. We didn’t, but it is an option.
What to eat-
- Restaurants- We ate at one of the ‘Top 100 Pubs of the World’, called Slovak Pub. It was good if you want to try cheap, Slovak food!
- Bryndzove halushky- Potato dumplings with sheep cheese (bryndza) and roasted bacon. This is what I ate, featured in the picture.
- Lavender ice-cream- I did not see this flavour ice-cream anywhere else during my travels this time or last time I was in Europe, and it was definitely a contender for one of my favourite ice-creams I ate the whole trip!
Très bel article.
Merci beaucoup
