We began our New Zealand adventure at Piha beach. It’s about a 50 minute drive from Auckland central. We flew into Auckland in the afternoon, so we didn’t have a whole lot of time but didn’t want to waste the afternoon. So we opted for a nearby beach just out of the hustle and bustle of the city for the perfect introduction to the North Island.

As you make the windy drive down to the beach, make sure you stop at the viewing point on the way for an amazing view over the beach.

Luckily, we hung around long enough to see the beautiful, red sunset that overtook the whole sky!

This is also a really popular surf spot amongst the locals. So if you love to surf, this could be a great place to check out and catch a wave.

The beach is free and so is parking.
